Letting Yourself Be Known
Our work should be known. To be publicized. Accepted. Celebrated.
And our art alone is not enough.
‼️ All too often, the creative geniuses of so many artists, visual and performance alike, often get smothered from silence. This romantic belief that our art alone is enough for so many prospective clients, agents, and production companies to reach out to us. But how can people hear us if we never leave the studio?
Because voice-acting is ultimately a business, you are the figurehead whose representative of the artist within you. You responsible for the outreach, the connections, the data. You are your very own spokesperson.
‼️ I’ve met a lot of prospective artists who groan at the idea of “business.” The cold-emails, the marketing strategies, the constant need to make connections. Same! I too have grimaced at the idea because I thought it was “selling out my soul.” And now, I contend against that thought. Instead of “selling out my soul,” it's now “letting my voice be heard" because my business and work is all about connecting my clients' stories and scripts with their audience.
🫠 Certainly, the constant loop of rejection, absence, and silence can take its toll on our craft. It can make us doubt ourselves about reaching out to others, reflecting those poisonous thoughts of self-doubt and becoming an imposter:
Am I ready for this?
What if I’m not good enough?
Am I just wasting my time?
I’m certainly still learning how to navigate through that journey. And despite it all, those challenges are what prompt me to continue reaching out. Letting this world know what I do best: telling stories and sharing my message across all boundaries.
✨ I’ve recently updated my website to better reflect who I am, what I love to do, and how I can help others. Updating my demo reels, optimizing my SEO, and revising my content. I initially saw this as “someone told me to make one, so I did,” and hoo boy… I did not respect that at first, and in turn, I was neglecting myself. My website is so much more: It’s my calling-card. My homebase. My suit of armor.
💡 Regardless of business, artistry, or personal:
We all have this desire to connect.
We’re social creatures. Stories are meant to be shared with others. They don’t just sit alone in darkness and silence, waiting to be unearthed when we’re long gone dead and dusted. We deserve to be seen, to be heard, to be felt.
🏆 Knowledge, technique, and skill all come in due time, but what will always remain supreme is your mindset within this industry. To be fueled from the prospect of what’s to come rather than to be dragged from the fear of failure. As my acting mentor, Paul Chalakani, would always say:
"Don't be afraid to go out on a limb. That's where the fruit is."
So take that chance, and do everything in your power to let yourself be known.
